The Vineyard in Autumn – Calm Before Winter

Early October. The sun still warms, but there is already a scent of approaching winter in the air. The vineyard is in its quiet season: the harvest is in, the wine is fermenting, and the vines are slowly going to sleep until next spring.

A Day Among the Rows

We begin the morning with an inspection tour. Each vine has its own personality. Some gave more this year, others less. We note which ones need extra attention next season: perhaps stronger pruning, perhaps additional support.

Algirdas is currently working among the Rondo rows — his favourite variety. He says Rondo reminds him of the feeling when he first understood that the vineyard was truly going to work.

Preparing for Winter

During September and October, we carry out important work:

• Removing remaining leaves and branches
• Mulching the soil around the vines with compost
• Checking wires and supports
• Planning next year’s pruning

This work is invisible but essential. Good wine is determined not only by summer and harvest — it is also determined by how well the vine rests through winter.

Looking Ahead

2025 will be an interesting year. We plan to grow the Marquette variety in a new row and experiment with organic protection. We are also dreaming of a small shop on the premises — where people can come, see the vineyard, and taste wine straight from the source.

But for now — quiet. The vineyard rests. And so do we.
